Krótka historia od Peterea Stevensa z ciekawymi zdjęciami modelu alternatywnego 917:

In late 1970 Porsche’s head of motorsport and engineering, Ferdinand Piëch decided that the 917 race budget was running away with itself and decided to cancel the car being developed in the Design Studio, Studio boss ‘Tony’ Lapine agreed but his team, comprising Design Chief Dick Söderburg, designers Dawson Sellar and Wolfgang Mobius, together with chief modeller Peter Reisinger and aerodynamisist Hans Braun, suggested to Lapine that he should get a signed agreement from Piëch that in exchange for cancelling their project they would have absolute control over the graphic design and colour schemes of all the Porsche racing cars. The team then delighted in producing some wild ‘hippy’ schemes but got most fun from "Der Trüffeljäger von Zuffenhausen", pigs often being used for rooting out truffles in the forests around the Porsche test track. The French aerodynamisist’s design, the 917-20 was painted pink for its Le Mans 24 hour race debut, with names of the various cuts of meat, written in German, across it in a similar fashion to a butcher's carcass diagram, The car is usually described as being very fast but in qualifying Pedro Rodguiges’ lap in the new Long Tail, of 3mins 13.90 seconds (average speed 250km/h – 156mph) was actually more than 7 seconds faster than the ‘Pink Pig’s’ 3mins 21.0 second lap. In the race the car crashed due to brake failure, no one had realized that the front brake cooling was inadequate on the poor old porker. It was not raced again.
